Lei Day Across the Islands

May Day is Lei day in the Hawaiian Islands. Every year on May 1st, people in Hawai‘i gather to celebrate its culture and aloha with plenty of colorful leis, music, and hula dancing. May Day invites everyone, of all ages, to join in on the celebration––from elementary school kids performing their hula dances on their school grounds to professional dancers and musicians glamorously dressed up to entertain on the big stages.

This project derived from the idea of wanting to share and tell the story of this unique holiday that’s cherished in Hawai‘i. Each island has its own island color and flower which is reflected in the designs. For the first week of May, Hawaiian Airlines sent out emails that told the stories about May Day, the islands, and ways to celebrate May Day virtually.
